Advancing Sustainable Cities: UNIPA’s Contribution to SDG-Based Urban Innovation

On February 6, 2026, the Università degli Studi di Palermo (UNIPA) took part in the seminar “Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Goals: Experiences and Case Studies”, hosted at the Department of Engineering in Palermo. The event brought together researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders to explore how the global framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can drive tangible progress in energy and urban systems.

A Step Toward SDG-Driven Urban Assessment

UNIPA’s contribution was delivered by postdoctoral researcher Alberto Brunetti, who presented the talk “Developing a Rating System for Urban Areas Inspired by the SDGs.” The presentation focused on translating SDG principles into actionable tools, specifically through the development of a structured rating system tailored to urban environments.

At the heart of this initiative is the ambition to support the evolution of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs)—urban areas designed to produce more energy than they consume—while aligning their performance with broader sustainability objectives.

From Vision to Methodology

The proposed SDG-based rating system is grounded in a comprehensive methodological workflow. A key element of this process is co-creation, achieved through active engagement with experts and stakeholders via dedicated workshops. This participatory approach ensures that the system reflects real-world needs, challenges, and opportunities across different urban contexts.

The presentation also highlighted progress in structuring Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), which will serve as measurable benchmarks for evaluating sustainability performance. These indicators are currently being refined, with the next steps focused on operationalisation and real-world implementation.

Bridging Energy Transition and Sustainable Development

By integrating SDG targets into urban evaluation frameworks, this work contributes to a more holistic understanding of sustainability—one that connects energy systems, urban planning, and social impact. Initiatives like this are essential for accelerating the energy transition while ensuring that cities remain inclusive, resilient, and environmentally responsible.

Looking Ahead

The development of SDG-aligned tools for urban assessment represents a significant step toward more transparent and impactful decision-making. As the project moves toward implementation, it has the potential to guide policymakers, planners, and communities in shaping the next generation of sustainable urban districts.
